This was a question that I got asked in my livestream chat on YouTube,
'I’m 60, have never exercised, how do I start?’
I think there’s an assumption that everyone knows how to exercise but there may be many reasons why people haven’t exercised before, and ( quite rightly ) are worried about how to start. It can be a mental block wrapped up in fear and anxiety. Working with the body is incredibly emotional for some people and so scary they cannot even begin to get started. I get many people following me who are fearful of an in-person class, social anxiety being a primary factor. And that's why I am proud to say my YouTube channel can help people cross that barrier. Pilates exercise can be very healing for mind, body and heart. For that reason, I want to reach out and support people of every age, no matter where they are in the world find joy in moving their bodies. It is the main reason I don’t have an app. I don't want money to stand in the way of getting healthy and happy. Call me altruistic but being able to be there for people is in my soul.
So what’s my answer to the question? Start simple, do as little or as much as you’re comfortable with and pick something easy. Don’t worry about how much you do and NEVER compare yourself to anyone else. YOU are YOU and they are them and that’s ok. Exercise for the benefits it’ll bring to your mind and body, not for any idealised aesthetic. And remember, it’s not a competition. Do it for YOU because you deserve to feel good in mind, body and soul. ❤️
